If you want to split hard drive into partitions without formatting, we’re here to help you to do it with available tools in Windows 7, 8 and 10
Partition hard drive using Disk Management
Step 1: Click Computer > Manager
Step 2: In Computer Management>Select Disk Management
Step 3: Right-click the drive you want to split -> Select Shrink Volume
Step 4: In Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB, enter the amount needed to partition → select Shrink to start the process (capacity is in MB, 1024MB = 1GB)
Step 5: Once done, you’ll still see a partition that is black, keep going
Step 6: Right-click that partition → New Simple Volume
Step 7: A new window will appear, select Next
Step 8: Select capacity for the drive to be splitted, the default is the the maximum size>Next
Step 9: Name the drive, you can choose whatever you like but the name can’t be matched with other existing drives on the computer
Step 10: Click Format this volume with… >Perform a quick format >Next to confirm the partition which you’ve just created (required)
Step 11: Select Finish and you’ve finished the partition process
Note:
- Free space cannot be merged into 1 disk that is running out of space
- Can only be applied to Primary drives and partitions , not to Logic drives and partitions
